He was issued U.S. Patent #831,173 for his invention of an aeroplane (airplane) on September 18, 1906, pre-dating the Wright Brothers. He died in the crash of his glider "The Evergreen". He was the subject of the 1946 movie, Gallant Journey, and he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1964.
