Early Aviation Pioneer and Inventor, he made the first manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights in the United States, near San Diego, California, on August 28, 1883. He was issued U.S. Patent #831,173 for his invention of an aeroplane (airplane) on September 18, 1906, pre-dating the Wright Brothers. He died in the crash of his glider "The Evergreen". He was the subject of the 1946 movie, Gallant Journey, and he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1964.
