Gerald "Jerry" Keith Boman, 68, of Notasulga died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at The University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital. Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Notasulga United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with burial following at the Notasulga Memorial Gardens. Revs. Bob Baschant and Marc Brown will officiate.
Jerry was born in New Albany, Ind., on March 16, 1944, to parents John Boman and Opal Richards Boman. He joined the United States Air Force in 1961 at the age of 17 and attained the rank of Technical Sergeant, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969. In 1972 Jerry was selected for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) program at Auburn University. He received his B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Auburn in December 1974 and completed Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, Texas, in March 1975, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. While stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, from 1975 through 1983 he worked as a structural engineer in the Flight Dynamics Lab, managing the Extension Fatigue Test Program for the F-4 fighter and served in the Foreign Technology Division, monitoring and evaluating the capabilities of foreign nations to develop and apply advanced materials to aerospace weapon systems.
Jerry earned an M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Dayton and an MBA at Wright State University. He completed his 24-year career with the USAF as an F-15 engineer at Warner Robins AFB, Ga. Jerry retired at the rank of Captain in 1985. He and his wife Brenda returned to Auburn where Jerry completed a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1993. Dr. Boman served as an instructor in the Civil Engineering Department through May 2012, where he taught Statics, Introduction to Hydraulics and Mechanics of Materials.
Jerry, Brenda and their daughters moved to Notasulga in 1995, where Jerry managed a herd of up to 150 beef cattle on their 160-acre farm. Jerry was a member of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association and the Notasulga United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He also served as chairman of the Notasulga Industrial Development Board. Jerry was an avid golfer, enjoying more than 25 years of golfing at sunrise with his buddy George Kenan. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with old friends Peter Parts and Dave Steely.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Brenda Butler Boman; sons Harold Boman and Richard (Sherry) Boman of New Albany, Ind., and Michael (Beth) Boman of Greenville, Ind.; daughters Laura (Tim Ritter) Boman of Orlando, Fla., and Leslie Boman of Notasulga; brother Larry Boman and stepmother Geneva Boman of New Albany, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Cory) Bailey of New Albany, Ind., Erica Boman of Georgetown, Ind., Brittney Boman and Justin Boman of Henryville, Ind., Bradley Cypert, Luke Boman and Sidney Boman of Greenville, Ind.; and his loyal dog, Sadie.
