Jazz composer, arranger and pianist. Worked primarily with Duke Ellington, and wrote or co-wrote Ellington standards such as "Lush Life," "Satin Doll," "Take The 'A' Train," "Passion Flower," "Day Dream," "Johnny Come Lately," and others. His career is chronicled in the biography "Lush Life," by David Hadju. Ellington wrote after Strayhorn's death: "He was not, as he was often referred to by many, my alter ego. He was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brainwaves in his head and his in mine."
