Felix Oscar Schlag
Birth: Dec. 4, 1891, Germany
Death: Mar. 9, 1974
Owosso
Shiawassee County
Michigan, USA

Sculptor, medalist, and the designer of the U.S. Jefferson nickel. Mr. Schlag immigrated to the U.S. with a successful art background in 1929 and first worked for General Motors styling automobiles. He moved to Chicago in the 1930s where he was commissioned to fashion sculptures on several prominate public edifaces. In 1937 Mr. Schlag entered into competition with 390 other artists to create a new design to replace the Buffalo Nickel. His rendition of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson for the obverse, and his Monticello home for the reverse was selected and approved by the U.S. Treasury, and minting began in late 1938. That same year Schlag became a U.S. citizen. During World War II he moved to Owosso, Michigan where his wife Ethel (Levin, married November 22, 1940 in Grand Rapids, MI) was employed as a teacher. Felix opened a photography studio there which he ran into the 1960s, before returning to sculpting and designing medals. In 1966 the U.S. Mint added his initials "FS" to the bottom of the obverse of the nickel below Jefferson's coat next to the rim, where they can be easily viewed today. Schlag's Jefferson obverse design was in use through 2004, while the Monticello reverse design was in use through 2003. Literally billions of Jefferson nickels designed by Schlag have been minted since production began in 1938. Parents: Carl and Theresa Schlag. Birthplace: Frankfort, Germany.  (bio by: Frank Passic, Albion Historian)
