MURPHYSBORO -- John B. Wathen, 98 years old, of Murphysboro, beloved teacher and educator, died at 2:53 a.m. Dec. 10, 2001, in the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County.
He was born on Oct. 31, 1903, in rural Equality to James Edward and Teresa Buntain Wathen.
He married Sarah Ellen Drone on March 3, 1924. She died on Aug. 19, 1980.
He is survived by his only daughter, Avis Wathen Cardwell; two granddaughters and their spouses, Debbie and Steve Glodo and Gaye and Jay Youngman, all of Murphysboro; great-grandchildren and their spouses, Josh and Angela Glodo, Barnhart, Mo., Sarah and Cody Muhs, Newton, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Matt Youngman and Beth Youngman of Murphysboro; and one great-great-granddaughter, Danielle of Barnhart, Mo.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Gary Gummersheimer at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at St. Andrew's Church in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Crawshaw Funeral Home on Wednesday and until the hour of services Thursday morning. Burial will be held in the Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the John and Ellen Wathen Memorial Scholarship which funds an annual scholarship for a Murphysboro High School Senior. Memorials may also be made to St. Andrew's Church.
John was a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal University in 1931, and received his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. He was a history teacher at Gorham Community High School until 1940 and he joined the faculty at MTHS in 1941. He was instrumental in the formation of the Murphysboro Unit District and became the Assistant Superintendent of District 186 in 1959. He retired from that position in 1969. John was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Murphysboro, and was also active in many civic and fraternal organizations. He was a lifetime member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No. 572.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his only brother, James Eugene Wathen, and his son-in-law, William Edward Cardwell.
