Betty was the daughter of Jeanette Knight and Gaines Edwin Hampton. She grew up in Arkansas with her five siblings, Eugene, Nita, Paul, Preston, and Bob.
She later moved to Oregon where she met her husband, William Homer Bales. They were married February 22, 1948. They have four children (Bill, Doug, Darci, & Brad), eight grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
