In 1852, he partnered with his brother to build the H and C Studebaker Company, located in South Bend, Indiana, which built carriages and heavy, broad-wheeled covered wagons called Conestoga wagons. In time, the three other brothers joined the business and the name was changed to the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company which manufactured horse-drawn vehicles. By 1901, he was in poor health and traveled to France to try to recuperate. Upon returning to the United States, he stumbled while leaving the ship and never fully recovered. He passed away a short time later. After his death, the company he had co-founded changed it's name once more. Under the new name of the Studebaker Automobile Company, it went on to be one of the first businesses to successfully manufacture electric vehicles (1902) and gasoline vehicles (1904).
