Cipriano Baca was born September 26,1859 in Martinez, Contra Costa County, California, to Theophilo Baca and Encamacion Briones. The family moved to Arizona and then to New Mexico. Cipriano became a deputy sheriff in Grant County, New Mexico, in 1891. He was an excellent deputy and in 1896, he tamed the wild mining town of Mogollon as best he could. He married Mary Berry of Kelly, New Mexico on February 22, 1898. Through the years she presented him with eleven children. Cipriano was much in demand as an officer of the law and worked at good many jobs. When New Mexico organized the Mounted Ranger Force in 1905, he was chosen as lieutenant by Governor Otero. Cipriano moved his family to Socorro, as that is where the headquarters for the Rangers was chosen to be. His brother, Leandro Baca, was sheriff of Socorro County. Cipriano wore many badges during the time he was in law enforcemen. He put on his last badge in 1918 when he returned to the New Mexico Mounted Police. He retired in 1920 and turned in his badge for the last time. He died just short of his 78th birthday, Sept 22, 1936, in Bernallio County, New Mexico. He is buried between to strangers to him, in an unmarked grave, in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Albuquerque. I wonder why he has no marker?
No headstone.
