Edward Louis Fiedler

Edward Louis Fiedler, 89, a resident of the King's Daughters Home in Midland, died on Friday, October 24, 2003, at the MidMichigan Medical Center following a short illness.

Ed was born in Sherwood, Wisconsin, July 29, 1914. His father was a cheese maker and his mother was a teacher. He grew up in Sherwood, Depere and Plymouth, Wisconsin. He graduated from DePere High School in 1932. He attended St. Norbert College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in chemistry in 1936.

In 1936, he joined The Dow Chemical Company as a chemist in the Britton organic research labs. During the war, he worked on Thiokol and Styraloy development. In 1943, he joined the latex scale-up, and semi-plant development group in 267 building. During his 41-year career at Dow, he was also a production supervisor in 414 and 553 buildings, and was instrumental in growth of styrene-butadiene latex to its high-volume global status today. Ed was one of the founding fathers and inventors of S/B latex used in paints, carpets backing and paper coatings.

Ed was very involved with family and community service activities. He especially enjoyed archery hunting, camping, traveling, reading, and socializing. He was an active member of the Boys Scout Camping Commission, the Dow Male Chorus (lifetime member), St. John's Episcopal Church Choir (62 years), the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE 10 years), the Chippewa Nature Center, Big Wheels Biking Club, and the KiWassee Kiwanis Club (14 years).

Ed married Lena Margaret Winterberg, a teacher, in 1940. They lived in Midland and raised three sons. Lenora died in 1987. Their sons and their families are Lawrence and JoAnn Fiedler of Midland (Steven and Scott), Robert and Carol Fiedler of Edina, MN (Katy and Christa), and Grant and Jensena Fiedler of Santiago, Chile (Skye and Brock). In 1990, Ed married Betty Ann Sellers. Ed is survived by Betty, and his three sons and their families.

Funeral services will take place at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 27, 2003, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 501 Hillcrest Drive. The Rev. Bruce McNab will officiate, with burial in Midland City Cemetery. Ed's family will receive friends at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Sunday, October 26, from 3 to 5 and from 6 to 8 p.m., and Monday from 9:00 p.m. until time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider St. John's Episcopal Church, the Boy Scouts of America, the KiWassee Kiwanis Foundation, or their favorite charity.
