Maria Sears Bangs was the daughter of Joseph Bangs and Julia Tuttle. She was born in Springfield, MA and received her education in the public and private schools of her native city. She married Frederick Otis Brooks on April 14, 1852 in Chicopee, MA. After their marriage, they moved west eventually settling in Madison, IN. Maria was librarian/director of the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library from 1886-1888. She was an author and a poet and her book "A Vision of the Mistletoe" was published in 1888. She was a member of the Western Association of Writers, serving as vice president and secretary. She also held the office of press superintendent for the Indiana Woman's Suffrage Association.
