His name on the birth certificate was Joseph Alexander Carlo. However, he later used the middle name "Vincent".
Family legend has it that Joseph was a twin and was attached at the hand with the other baby, thus when separation occurred Joseph was left with only one finger on one hand. Did Joseph truly have only one finger on his one hand? If he did, it wasn't because he was attached to another baby.
Now that I have looked at the birth records for all the children of James Vincenzo and Carmela (Termini) Carlo that were born in Belmont County, Ohio (all were born there except one), I have made a determination. Joseph was NOT a twin. I just discovered (on 12/07/2013) that he was named after his older brother, Joseph Carlo (1917-1917). I did not know of the first Joseph's existence until 12/07/2013. Under the question "Twin, Triplet, or other?" on his birth certificate an "X" was marked. The next question asked what order he was in this twin or multiple birth, and it was marked "2nd". This is a mistake and should have been left blank. Further down on the page it said he was the second child born of this mother, one of which was living. No record of birth or death could be found for a twin of this second Joseph (1918-1982), thus I do not believe he was a twin. Marjorie's 1920 birth certificate states that she is the third child born of her mother; two of which were living. This would be a true statement if Joseph was not a twin. Carmela was born in Missouri, so I have not seen her birth certificate. The last child, Antinetta, was born in Shadyside, Belmont County, Ohio, and her birth record lists her as the 5th child of the mother, 4 of which were living. This, again, is a true statement if the second Joseph was not a twin. Joseph was born at 11:30 pm on 12 July 1918.
