Donald Raymond Whitney, 83, of Longview passed away Oct. 19, 2012.

He was born March 19, 1929, in Silver Creek, Minn., to Raymond and Minnie (Meyer) Whitney. Both of his parents were deaf, and so was Donald.

The family moved to Longview in 1939 and Donald graduated from the Washington School for the Deaf in 1950, serving as class president and participating in sports and the photo club. He was named to the National Deaf All-American Football Team as center two years in a row and was named to the WSD Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Donald met the love of his life, Evelyn Dixon while attending WSD. They were married June 19, 1954, and she remained his loving wife for 58 years.

Donald worked for Longview Fibre Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed trips to the beach, fishing, clam digging and sharing advice with his friend Bob Sherard at Bob's Merchandise. Donald also enjoyed hunting, traveling the U.S. and taking cruises. He was a member of the WSD Alumni Association and was a skilled woodworker and artist, creating decoys and personalized fishing boxes for family members. Donald always had a smile to share. He will be missed.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Donald is survived by two daughters, Arleen (David) Goedert of Longview and Cindy Smolinski of Swartz Creek, Mich.; a son, Edward (Maggie) Whitney of Shelton, Wash.; a sister, Rena Wickwire in California; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ken Whitney.

A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park & Crematory.
