The son of William & Margaret (Beistle) Heffelfinger, in 1860, he was a laborer living in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 3" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 22, 1864, as a private with Co. L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pa). On June 30, 1865, he transferred to Co. L, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, as part of a war-end consolidation move and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865. Somerwhere in there, he was promoted to corporal.

He married Hetty Berry March 12, 1870, and fathered William K. (b. 06/17/71 - d. 10/19/77), Walter H. (b. 01/12/74), Berta Alice (b. 02/28/76), George Albert (b. 07/25/77), Elizabeth N. (b. 04/18/79), Gussie Lou (b. 06/06/83), Mary Nancy (b. 01/26/86), Mabel (b. 06/24/89), and Karl Berry (b. 10/13/95). In 1880, he lived with his family in Virginia, Cass County, Illinois, and his first four children were born in Illinois. The rest entered life in Iowa.
