Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1967 to 1978), he played at the outfielder position with the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born David LaFrance May, he attended William Penn High School in Delaware and following graduation he was signed as an amateur free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 1961. He would be drafted away by Baltimore in 1962 and on July 28th, 1967, he marked his Major League debut with the Orioles. He played in 36 games that year and recorded 20 hits. In 1969, he experienced postseason action as a member of the American League Pennant-winning Orioles' squad and recorded two plate appearances during the 1969 World Series. May's most productive years were as a Brewer, when he secured the starting center-fielder position and in 1973, he yielded career-highs in hits with 189, home runs with 25, runs-batted-in with 93 and a .303 batting average for which earned him All-Star status. He had the distinction of being exchanged in a trade for Hank Aaron, when May was dealt to Atlanta after the 1974 season. In 1,252 regular season games, he compiled 920 hits with a .251 lifetime batting average. He extended his career as he briefly played in the Inter-American League. His son Derrick May went onto have a 10-year Major League career. Dave May died of complications from diabetes and cancer.
