James W. Pitcher Dies at Age of 88

FULTON, Feb. 22.—James W. Pitcher, 88, died at his home, 455 S. First st., early this morning. He was a Civil War veteran, joining the Ninety-fourth Voluteers, and took part in seven battles. He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1 to July 3, 1863. He was mustered out of the service
July 18, 1865.

Mr. Pitcher was born in Lewis County May 19, 1840, and came to Fulton 40 years ago. He was a member of Schenck Post, G.A.R.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jennie Pitcher; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Stanley Hackman, Albany; a stepson, Harry Stevens, Albany, and a sister, Mrs. Safronia Lampkins, Volney.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Pitcher home. Rev. William M. Caldwell, pastor of the State Street M. E. Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Adnah Cemetery.

James W. Pitcher, 89, died Friday morning at his home, in Fulton, following a short illness. Mr. Pitcher was born in Lewis county, May 19, 1840, and located in Fulton in 1899 at the age of 49, where he has since resided. He enlisted in the 94th volunteer regiment of the New York state at the outbreak of the Civil war and fought in several of the important battles of that conflict.

He was a member of the division which engaged in the memorable Battle of Gettysburg, from July 1 to July 3 in 1863. Mr. Pitcher was mustered from the army on July 13, 1865. He was a member of Schenk Post, G.A.R., and was the second Civil War veteran to expire in the last week in Fulton, William J. Ellis having died Tuesday evening. This now reduces the ranks of the veterans to about nine.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the late home at 7:30. Rev. W.M. Caldwell, pastor of the State street Methodist Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Adnah.

Mr. Pitcher is survived by his wife, Jennie; one sister, Mrs. Sophronia Lampkins, Volney; a step-daughter, Mrs. Stanley Hackrnan and a stepson, Harry Stephens, both of Albany.
