Else Leist, the twenty-three year old bride who returned to India with Bruno I in 1905, was the third of four children of Hugo Leist and Aine Liebermann. Else was born November 23, 1882 in Berlin. She married Bruno Vassel I on 14 Sept 1905 in Friedenauer Kirche, Berlin, Brandenburg, Prussia, Germany and they left immediately for India where Bruno worked as an architect and builder. Bruno Vassel II was born in India. Else and Bruno II returned to Berlin, Germany before the First World War broke out. Their second son, Dieter Vassel, was born July 16, 1921 in Berlin-Schoneberg.
Else's father, Hugo Leist, heard about an international contest to design and supervise construction of the Banco Alemão Transatlantico, a German bank to be built in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He suggested to his son-in-law that he submit a bid for the job. Bruno I did so, and won the bid. Therefore, Bruno I, Else and Dieter who was less than two years old, sailed for Brazil in 1922, while Bruno remained in uncle Peter Vassel's school in Schwarzburg, Thuringen, Germany. In the late summer of 1923 Bruno II, age fifteen, sailed from Breman to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Bruno I built the Banco Alemão Transatlantico, and then designed and supervised the building of the Hospital de Estranjeros. He also built several private homes in Niteroi. Bruno II went to the USA where he became a biochemist. In 1946 Else and Bruno I joined Bruno II and his family in Toledo, Ohio. In 1948 Bruno I died and Else returned to Brazil to live with her son Dieter and family. She died in Brazil in 1976.
