He received a degree in law from the University of Virginia in 1846. He was a planter from 1846 - 1860. In 1861 he served as a Private in Tarrant's Battery, C.S.A and as Judge Advocate in Forrest's Brigade in 1864. He was a commission merchant in Mobile from 1865 - 1869.
