Born in New South Wales, Australia, he served as a Corporal in the 54th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces. On September 1, 1918, the 54th Battalion was ordered to take the ground between the River Somme and Péronne, France. Advancing toward the first trench line held by German machine guns, Corporal Buckley rushed the post, shooting four men and taking twenty-two prisoners. As the Germans retreated to the only remaining bridge into Péronne, Corporal Buckley with three other members of his company, tried to force his way across under heavy fire and was killed in the attempt. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on December 14, 1918. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
