Helen Shoemaker was born in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey on August 8, 1878. She was the youngest of ten children born to Horace Brewster Shoemaker and Mary Elizabeth Erety Shoemaker. Helen graduated from Smith College in zoology in 1901. On August 3, 1904 she was married to Samuel Lewis Elmer in Bridgeton. He was known as S. Lewis Elmer. They were the parents of five children: Lucia Mary, Mary Erety, Samuel Lewis Jr., Horace Newton and Helen Elizabeth Elmer. Helen was a much beloved wife and mother. They spent summers in their cottage on Martha's Vineyard and in the winter lived in Brooklyn, New York where S. Lewis Elmer was a teacher and organist. Helen died on July 27, 1936 in the Oak Bluffs family cottage and was buried on Martha's Vineyard in Abels Hill Cemetery, Chilmark, Duke County, Massachusetts.
