Composers of ballads and boleros. After graduating as a teacher from the University of Puerto Rico when he was only 16 years old, he spent the next five years teaching in various rural towns in the southeastern corner of the island. He was called to military duty in 1918 with the United States Army, where he served in a clerical position. After moving to New York City, he met Puerto Rican composer Rafael Hernandez, who introduced him to his many friends, mostly musicians, who provided an outlet and sparked a creative expression that produced scores of now classic songs. Some of these were: "Despedida," "Linda," and "Sin bandera," "Sueño de amor", "Quejas del alma," "Abandono," "Perdón," "Esperanza inútil," "Bajo un palmar," "Amor," "Margie," "Querube," "Obsesión," and "Linda." Flores founded the Cuarteto Flores and started recording his songs in 1930. After several years Flores organized a new quartet with an assortment of very talented people, including singer Daniel Santos. (bio by: Jose Ruiz-Alvarez)
