Family tradition says that he came over on the Ship Sally, Master Patrick Brown, hidden in coil of tow or hemp rope. Arriving with his father in Philadelphia on 10 November 1767. Settling first in Berks County, Pennsylvania by the late eighteenth century they were settled on a land grant in Frederick County, Maryland in what became known as Foxville.
His first wife and he had five sons and four daughters: Jacob Fox (d. in Ohio), Maria Catharine Buhrman, Catherine Moriah Buhrman (d. in Ohio), George "Philip" Fox, Philip "George" Fox (d. in Ohio), John Anthony Fox, Henry Fox, Elizabeth Brown. One daugher Susan Fox by his second wife.
