James was a son of Coleman Hartley and Sarah Thornton. He married Miriam Ann Cornelius May 17, 1865 in Blount County AL.
Miriam and Gideon had no children of their own. They did adopt a 4 month old girl, Sirenna Mabel Hartley, June 26, 1894 in Brown County TX.
