Sgt James Yuill Turnbull
Birth: Dec. 24, 1883
Death: Jul. 1, 1916

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he served as a Sergeant in the 17th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, British Army. During actions at Leipzig Salient, Authuille, France, July 1, 1916, Sergeant Turnbull captured a post of great importance to the enemy, knowing he would be subjected to severe counter-attacks. Although his squad was wiped out and replaced several times during the day, Sergeant Turnbull never wavered in his determination to hold the post. He almost single-handedly maintained his position and later in the day, he was killed while holding off another bombing a counter-attack. For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the on November 24, 1916. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
