Mrs. DeWilla Lucille Dull Smith, 81, of Mocksville died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at her home.

She was born July 19, 1931, in Davie County to the late Floyd Webster and Elma Mae Lowery Dull.

One of her earliest jobs after graduating from Farmington High School was as a telephone operator. One special day, she met Fredrick Eugene Smith while on the switchboard and later became his bride on April 21, 1951. They moved frequently with his enlistment in the U.S.Air Force but settled back in Davie County upon discharge. She worked a number of years at Hanes Hosiery and loved to share stories about those carpooling days. Later on she was employed by Bank of Davie, which later became Branch Banking & Trust. She retired from there with 29 years of service.

In retirement, she and Gene bought a motor home and hit the road. They were members of several camping clubs and made many wonderful lifelong friends. Their travels took them on extended trips from Florida to Alaska and many destinations in between.

Throughout her life she served on many committees and boards within her community including: Arts Council & Arts Alive events and the Davie Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans & Auxiliary. She faithfully logged in hundreds of volunteer hours at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury. DeWilla and Gene loved working with hospitalized veterans and it was evident by their servant hearts.

As a life long member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Mrs. Smith held most (if not all) positions in her church. These included the Board of Trustees, choir leader, United Methodist Women and church pianist for 60 years, to name only a few.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene in 2008; a brother, Vestal and half-sister, Mildred Reavis.

Interment in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
