Gen Georg Stumme
Birth: Jul. 29, 1886
Halberstadt
Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany
Death: Oct. 24, 1942
El Alamein
Matruh, Egypt

World War II German Army General. He was the commander of Axis forces at the Second Battle of El Alamein, during the temporary absence of British Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, until his death by heart attack after an Allied attack. He joined the German Army as an officer cadet in 1906 and was a Lieutenant by the time World war I broke out, serving in the 1st (Prussian) Calvary Regiment. He remained in the Army after the war, rising to Lieutenant General by 1938. He commanded the Second Light Division in the Invasion of Poland, which later became the 7th Panzer Corps, and was promoted to General of Calvary in 1940. He became commander of XXXX Corp, after promotion to full General, fighting in the Greek and Yugoslav invasions and in Bulgaria in 1941, and took part in “Operation Barbarossa” – the invasion of the Soviet Union - capturing Mozhaisk and attacking Stalingrad. He was court-martialed in 1942 due to the Soviet capture of German operational plans, but General Fedor von Bock obtained his release, whereupon he was sent to fight in Africa with the Afrika Korps. He was awarded the Iron Cross first and second class as well as the Knight's Cross (in 1940). (bio by: Kenneth Gilbert)
