Opera Singer. A dramatic mezzo-soprano, she is remembered for her long career in Europe's principal venues. Raised in Bologna, Italy, she studied voice in Milan and made her 1843 professional debut at Urbino as ‘Bianca’ from Saverio Mercadante's "Il giuramento" then after a time of refining her art at Messina's Teatro Vittorio Emanuele began making appearances throughout Italy. Through her years on the stage she sang a number of world premiers including those of Giovanni Pacini's "Malvina di Scozia" (1851, Naples) and Lauro Rossi's "L'alchemista" (1853, Naples), though the works involved are now essentially forgotten. She was to make a name in more familiar roles including the ‘Gypsy Azucena’ of Giuseppe Verdi's "Il Trovatore", Rosina from Rossini's "The Barber of Saville" in the days before the part was appropriated by coloraturas, Leonor de Guzman from Donizetti's "La favorite", and the title lead of Gioachino Rossini's "La Cenerentola". She premiered the French version of "Il Trovatore" at Paris' Theatre-Italien on January 12, 1857, gave her 1860 first London performances at Her Majesty's Theatre as ‘Leonor de Guzman’ and ‘Azucena’, and in November of that year sang Fides in Meyerbeer's "Le prophete" at Bologna's Teatro Communale. Over the coming years she was heard as Desdemona in Rossini's incarnation of "Otello" and as Federica from Verdi's "Luisa Miller" while continuing to perform such signature pieces as Azucena, Rosina, and Fides. Adelaide Borghi-Mamogave a world premiere as late as 1879 when she was Beatrice in Emilio Usiglio's "Le donne curiose" at Madrid's Teatro Real, was active into the 1880s, and lived out her day's in Bologna. Married to tenor Michele Mamo, she was the mother of soprano Erminia Borghi-Mamo. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
