He was king for more than 60 years until his abdication in 2004. Known as the "King Father" (Preahmâhaviraksat), he continued to exercise some of the ceremonial functions that had a king. Norodom was prime minister 10-times, two-times king, twice head of state with other securities and president of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea. Graduated at the "Lycée Chasseloup Laubat" of Saigon, he became King on April 23, 1941 following the death of his maternal grandfather. Norodom was immediately made famous by his extravagant lifestyle and out of the ordinary. Amateur composer and conductor of an orchestra of jazz, lover of cars, he was also a great lover of women. He was a staunch supporter of independent Cambodia and a fierce opponent of communism in Vietnam. During his eclectic political life, he has received numerous awards, including the "Collar of the Order of the Chrysanthemum" by Japan and the "Order of Suvorov" by Soviet Union.
