New York, USA
|Death: ||Nov. 23, 1894|
Maria was the daughter of Phebe Dingee and Aaron Palmer. It is believed that Maria was a native of Orange, NY.
She married William W. Collins in Michigan. He was a student at the University of Michigan at the time, and graduated with an M.D. degree in 1852. They were the parents of five children all born in Michigan: Adelbert (had daughter Grace); Frank (had no children); William (died young); Kate (had Kate Vane); and Jennie (had Madalon and Max Keedy).
Her obituary said that Maria was survived by her five children, five grandchildren, her mother, and a sister Hellen. I only know of four grandchildren, but Frank had a step-daughter, Josie Swan, who was undoubtedly welcomed as the fifth grandchild.
Maria lived the last eight years of her life with her daughter Jennie and family in Chicago. She is also memorialized in the Collins Family Cemetery in Lyndon Twp. MI. There is no headstone remaining in that location, but her memory was recorded in an early transcription of the cemetery. The Collins Family Cemetery was also known as the Collins Plains Cemetery, and is now erroneously called the "Judson Collins Memorial Cemetery" on Find-A-Grave.
We know that Maria's sister Hellen (married name at time of death: Hulatt) was shipped from Chicago to Dowagiac MI when she died and that she is buried in Riverside Cemetery there. We know that their mother Phoebe was shipped from Chicago to Dowagiac when she died, and suspect that Phoebe is probably buried in Riverside Cemetery too. It seems likely these two wanted to be buried in Dowagiac because it was also the resting place of Aaron Palmer. I have not found any death record information for him, however, and Riverside Cemetery has no record of burials done before 1905.
Hopefully any descendants will find this information helpful.
