2 Portlanders Die in Crash
EUGENE, April 22 (AP)—Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Murphy, 7826 N. Willamette boulevard, Portland, died instantly early Monday when their speeding automobile crashed into a slow-moving Oregon Electric freight train at a Harrisburg crossing.
W. H. Dunham, Portland, conductor on the train, said he saw the 1941 Mercury auto coming about a mile away, and that it was traveling at an excessive speed. The train, he said, was traveling about 10 to 12 miles an hour.
The car crashed into the train, derailing one freight car. The auto, dragged down the track 130 yards, was demolished. The Murphys were apparently on their way to Myrtle Creek from Portland, where he was engaged in the trucking business.
The bodies were taken to the Miller-Sherman chapel at Junction City.
