CHARLES M. ALLGAIER DROWNED
On Thursday last, Mr. Charles M. Allgaier, in company with his brother-in-law, Walter Swigert, son of Mr. Samuel Swigert, and Frank and Lincoln, sons of Mr. John Gardner, the three last named being in their 'teens,' went to the Chariton bottom, near the Nineveh bridge, after blackberries, intending to camp over night. In the evening, after eating their lunch, they concluded to take a swim in the river. All four went in, wading around awhile in shallow water, when suddenly the two Gardner boys went down In deep water. Link swam to the shore, and Frank attempted to swim back to the stepping off place, and having nearly reached it held out his hand to Charley Allgaier for help, as he was swimming against a strong current, Charley reached out to help him and fell in himself, and from some cause, strangling or cramp, was unable to care for himself, and was drowned before the others could render him aid. Word was sent to town during the night and early next morning a number of persons went to the river, and searched all day without finding his body. Saturday morning the search was renewed, and a tree which had fallen into the river, was hitched to with ropes, and fifty or sixty men commenced to pull it across the river, but had not pulled far until the body of Mr. Allgaier came to the surface. It was supposed to have lodged in among the roots. The body was brought home, and buried Saturday evening, a largo number of our citizens attending. Funeral services at the cemetery, by Rev. J. B. Mitchell. This sad accident is a severe blow to his young wife, parents and other friends. His age was 25 years and 16 days.
