Daughter of John Harkless , mother's name is unknown, she grew up in Matagorda City/Co. TX with her siblings, she attended school there in the late 1920s she met Lake Simmons that worked on the docks, in the trade of the area in that Bayside town, their way of life.
They married about 1929 and became parents in 1930 , their daughter, Lara was born in Robstown Nueces Co. TX. Lake worked as a ranch hand and she worked as a waitress or did
domestic work. Friend/relatives helped with their newborn
and life was good, until 1933, she was shot and killed by a bullet that came through the window of her home, striking her in the head and killing her. Her relatives agreed to raise their daughter and she remained in Robstown and attended High School in Corpus Christi, TX , giving Lake a chance to see her regularly since he worked in the same town.
Hazel, was taken home by a relative, Clifton White and on 31 July 1933, she was buried in Ceder Vale Cemetery in Bay City, Matagorda Co. TX ...Texas Death Certificate # 24535
Reg # 920. I have found their daughter Lara died in Brazos Co TX about 2010. To my surprise she used
Simmons as her maiden name !
