Professional Basketball Player, Coach. For five seasons (1961 to 1966), he played at the guard position in the National Basketball Association with the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. Born Donnis Butcher, he attended Meade High School (Kentucky) and played collegiate basketball at Pikeville College (Kentucky). Selected by the New York Knicks during the 7th round of the 1961 NBA Draft, he appeared in 279 regular season games and compiled 1,696 points. Butcher succeeded Dave DeBusschere as head coach of the Detroit Pistons (1967 to 1969) and guided them to a playoff berth in 1968. His son Donnie went onto become a successful collegiate coach at the University of the Cumberlands. (bio by: C.S.)
