Lacy James Green
Birth: Aug. 8, 1888
Death: Mar. 17, 1970
Brookwood (Tuscaloosa County)
Tuscaloosa County
Alabama, USA

Lacy had 4 children with her first husband, WG McBrayer.
They were Ethel, Green, Lindy and Bill.

She inherited 2 more children when she married Dillard Green.
They were Jessie and William.

Together, Lacy and Dillard had 6 more children:
Syble, Viola, Effie, Robert, JF, and Terry.

Twelve children: that's a big family, and no one was a "half" anything. My mother told me that when she was very young, too young to know what the term even meant, someone said something to her about Lindy being her "half-sister," and she became fighting angry and determined to set them straight. In this family, they were all just "brothers" and "sisters." It is a testament to this attitude, that in 2012, 70-some years later, both the Greens and the McBrayers claim Ethel as their own. It is only because the 1920 Census shows 4 children named McBrayer, including Ethel, living with Harmon and Lacy Green, that we can be sure Ethel was Lacy's child rather than Mary Weaver's.

Lacy Green was widely known as "Mama Green." When I knew her, she and my
"Papa Green" lived on a farm in Brookwood, Alabama. She cooked, cleaned, raised chickens, and kept a wonderful flower garden. I remember hydrangeas, day lilies, wood violets, and four-o-clocks. There was also a muscadine grapevine behind the back porch.

Somehow food always tasted better at Mama Green's house, maybe because she cooked on a wood stove. I used to love to watch her make homemade biscuits from scratch.
So far, of Effie's four girls, only my little sister Barbara has ever been able to duplicate them.

I'd love to hear from others who knew her, so we can add those memories to this biography.

This is my grandmother's story, as best I can remember,
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn White Davis,
Effie's daughter

My sister Judy and several of my cousins have Mama Green's name recorded as
Mary Amanda Lacy James Green.

Family tradition also tells us Mama Green was a midwife and herbalist.
