Backus Dies
Mrs. Leona E. Backus,
51, Syracuse,, formerly of
Watertown, wife of Stanley
S. Backus, died at 8 p.m.
Thursday at the Upstate
Medical Center, Syracuse.
Mrs. Backus died on her
39th wedding anniversary.
The funeral will be Monday
at 10 a.m. at the Hart
and Johnston Funeral
Home and at 10:30 a.m. at
the Church of Our Lady of
the Sacred Heart. Burial
will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Calling hours are Saturday
and Sunday from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Besides her husband, she
is survived by three daughters,
Mrs. Richard (Edith)
Payne, Burke, Mrs. Mary
Jane Cline, Syracuse, and
Mrs. Dennis (Brenda) Daltolo,
Syracuse; three sons,
Stanley, Jr., Robert and
Roy, of Syracuse, a sister,
Mrs. Floyd (Marion) Reynolds,
Midtown Towers,
and nieces and nephews.
Born Sept. 22,1924, at Depauville,
a daughter of Joseph
and Mary Sharlow
Roshia, she attended local
schools and was married to
Stanley S. Backus Jan. 15,
1937, at Carthage. The couple
resided in Syracuse several
years.
Mrs. Backus' marriage
as a child bride, 12 years
old, drew wide attention in
1937.
