Alvin was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

The Evening News of the Tonawanda - June 16, 1948

The body of Lt Alvin W. Kersten, killed while on a bombing mission over Iwo Jima on Oct 1, 1944 will arrive at the New York Central Station at 8:28 am tomorrow for reburial in the White Chapel Memorial Park Saturday afternoon.

Lt. Kersten flew 60 missions over Japanese-held islands in the Pacific and he received the distinguished Flying Cross and other decorations for outstanding service as a bombardier aboard a 7th AAF Liberator, the "Bolivar." He had more than 100 hours of flying in the service.

His ship took part in a number of the most important engagements of the South Pacific campaign. He was lost with the other members of his crew on one of the most daring raids of the conflict, the Air Force Reported.

A native of Tonawanda, Lt. Kersten was 22 when he was killed. He was a graduate of the Tonawanda High School where he played in the school band. He graduated in June 1940 and enlisted in Buffalo on March 12, 1942. He was employed in the office of the Buffalo Bolt Company at the time of his enlistement.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kersten, Lt. Kersten is survived by two sisters and his grandparents.

Lt. Kersten was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, of which he was a past president. He was also a member of the Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church.
