Nellie Virginia Herring was the daughter of Walter and Ada Me Hicks Davis. As a young girl she worked in a silk factory in Orange, VA. Her family moved to PA and ran a dairy farm, then moved to Woodbridge, VA, where they brought a business consisting of a store, garage and tourist home. It is there she met her husband, Woodrow W. Herring, Sr., and they married on June 20, 1937.
Over the next 52 years they worked together building several successful business. They came to Fairfax County in 1941 and bought Willow Spring Garage. They saw the future in excavating and started W.W. Herring Excavating. Afterwards, they went into land development, developing Widewater Beach in Stafford, VA.
Together they raised three children each of them a decade apart. Each grew up in a different era as Nellie and Woodrow grew their businesses. Woodrow preceded Nellie in death in 1989. Nellie was a member of Centreville United Methodist Church for 62 years and a member of Hope Chapter #73 OES for 50 years. She remained in her home of 62 years until her death.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Teddy, Moses, and Tom Davis, and three sisters, Dorothy Conley, Garnette Starkey and Dolly Griffis.
Survivors include their children, a grandson, three granddaughters, four great-grandsons, two sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
