Born February 1, 1912, in Covington, Georgia, to Albert M., Sr., and Hattie Alexander Dobbins, little Hattie quickly embarked on a lifetime of education, inspiration, and adventure. A proud graduate of Young Harris College, it was at that little Methodist school near Brasstown Bald that Hattie met her husband of thirty-one years, a ministry student named William Arthur Pilgrim.

Married on March 3, 1933, and graduating together, Hattie and William progressed to Emory University, where William studied theology and Hattie entered the Nursing program.
