His last hours were peaceful. John was born as the third child to Thaddeus Henry and Hattie Elizabeth Alley Ashmore on July 20, 1918 in Bertram, Texas. He worked on the family farm with his father until he enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII. He served honorably with the Navy's PATSU 1-9 unit in the South Pacific. After the war, John attended the University of Houston and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Immediately following his graduation from the University of Houston, John married Arlene Grace Weatherred at her parents' home in Abilene, Texas on August 27, 1950. They made Houston their permanent home with Arlene working for the Houston Independent School District and John working with several engineering firms and at NASA. John's interests were centered on his faith and his family. He was a member of Houston's Second Baptist Church since 1952. He was very involved with the Park Place Masonic Lodge and was the past Worshipful Master from 1974 to 1975. He was a devoted husband to Arlene with the family vacations dedicated to visiting relatives. He was a devoted father who stressed the importance of an education to his sons and was proud that his sons became an attorney and a physician. John was a devout Christian, a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan, and a dedicated family genealogist. John is preceded in death by Arlene, his wife of 57 years, by his son John E. Ashmore, Jr, and by his sister Allie Marie Pharr. John is survived by his younger son and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Thaddeus H. Ashmore and their children Olivia Grace, John Heath, Ireland Elizabeth, and Tristian Cross of Dallas, Texas; his son John's adoptive son Joshua A. and John's daughter Sarah Alice of Houston, Texas; his nephew and wife, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Halling of Conroe, Texas; his niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. T. Parker of Crockett, Texas; his nephew, Marcus B. Anderson of Houston, Texas; his niece and husband, Dr. and Mrs. Lonnie Sinclair of Woodlands, Texas; his nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pharr of Houston; his niece Barbara Stewart of New Mexico; and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Woodway location of the Second Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. Interment will follow immediately at the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
