Almeta was born in Groesbeck, Texas, to the late Melvin and Cumi Rountree. She spent her early years in Limestone County where she graduated from Groesbeck high school. In 1945, she married Cloyce Key. As a young woman, she was employed by the Limestone Theater. After living in Groesbeck, Fort Worth, and Gatesville, they made their home in Killeen where she was employed by Centel Telephone Company working in customer service until retirement. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Killeen where she worked for years in the children's department. In later years, she attended the ladies department where she served as secretary. Almeta relished traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She loved going to the farm in Groesbeck at every opportunity with her brother, Algie and sister, Juanita.
Family and friends gathered there on weekends and holidays.
Cooking was one of Almeta's pastimes, preparing foods that her family enjoyed. She was always willing to help anyone in a time of need. Having no children of her own, Almeta was fondly remembered as Aunt Meta by her nieces and nephews. After the passing of her husband in 2004, she found herself traveling between Killeen and Waco, helping her sister and other family members until becoming unable to drive and made her home in Hewitt.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sister; and brother.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
