Between their meeting and their marriage at First Southern Baptist of Guthrie, Sam spent 4 years in the US Army in Germany.
After marriage, Sam and Margaret moved to Guymon, where Sam partnered with Chester Leach in a welding business and Margaret was a 4-H home economist. They moved back to Guthrie in 1969. There Sam embarked on a long career as a self-employed welder and developed a lifelong passion as a part-time rancher. He ended his career as a pipeline welding inspector.
