Nathaniel Gerald Willoughby was born in Republic County, Kansas, near the little village of Cuba. His parents were William Henry and Rachel Ann Mapes Willoughby. He was the youngest child in a family of seven, and he spent most of the younger years of his childhood in Republic County. Nathaniel's father was a preacher as well as a farmer, so church activities were as much a part of family life as the farm was.
After Nathaniel's mother died in 1899, his father moved to Oklahoma with the two children who were still at home, Nathaniel and his brother Vernon. Nathaniel joined the U.S. Army in 1901 and had a long and honorable military career. He married Elizabeth Nelson about 1920, in New York City. They were the parents of three children (Olive, Verna, and Nathaniel Gerald, Jr.) Nathaniel and Elizabeth divorced, but remarried on March 2, 1935, in District of Columbia.
Staff Sgt. Nathaniel Gerald Willoughby died on February 4, 1936, at Fort Totten, near Bayside, in Queens County, New York. He is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery, 625 Jamaica Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11208. Section 14, Site 15909. (Number R-154006.)
