Death: Mar. 8, 1914

Edward Welles was born in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1832, the youngest of nine children of Charles Fisher Welles and the former Ellen J. Hollenback. He was the eighth generation of the Welles family in America, descended from the Welles line of Essex, England.

He entered Lafayette College in May of 1848 and, after completing his freshman year, transferred to Williams College in September of 1849. He completed his sophomore and junior years there, then left his studies in 1851 in order to aid his brother, John, in general business and agriculture on their parents' estate, a task that occupied his attention until 1870.

In 1871, he made his residence in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and soon after became a director of the Second National Bank there. He received an honorary Master's degree from Lafayette in 1872. He resigned from his position at the Second National Bank in 1879, but was made a director of the People's Bank in 1884. He was a manager of the Hollenback Cemetery Association and its secretary and treasurer from 1882 to 1896. He was also president of the Hollenback Coal Company. He was a member of and active worker in the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, with which he served as trustee for many years. He was a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church.

On August 26, 1891, Welles married Stella Hollenback, daughter of George M. and Julia A. (Woodworth) Hollenback, of Yorkville, Illinois. To this union was born a son, Edward Welles, Jr., who graduated from Lafayette College in 1916. Edward Welles passed away two years earlier, however, at his Wilkes-Barre home on March 8, 1914.
