Historian. He was one of the most eminent historians in the Great Britain, from a Marxist perspective, who wrote more than 30 books. His reputation rests largely on four works, including three-volume spanning the period from 1789 to 1914: "The Age of Revolution" (1962), "The Age of Capital" (1975) and "The Age of Empire" (1987). A later volume, "Age of Extremes," took the story forward from 1914 to 1991, which has been translated into 40 languages, and influenced generations of politicians and fellow historians. His last book, "How to Change the World" (2011), was a collection of essays on Marx and Marxism from the 1960s. In 1998, the British government made him a Companion of Honour.
