Keokuk was deployment point for thousands of Iowa soldiers being shipped south on the Mississippi River. It also housed military hospitals for the sick and wounded. It was rampant with disease to which many of these men had never been exposed such as measles, scarlet fever, diptheria, typhoid and other forms of dysentery
