Viola "Vi" (Dahlgren) Carrell, 98, of Byron left this life Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. Born March 11, 1914, in Chicago, daughter of Gust and Selma (Nelson) Dahlgren. At the age of four, Viola lost her mother in the 1918 flu epidemic. Selma and three sisters had emigrated from Sweden, as had Viola's father. Vi and sister, Marge, attended the one-room school on Harlem Ave., in Loves Park, and lived with the Carman cousins while their father worked in Chicago. Vi had warm memories of working as a supervisor at Abbott Labs in North Chicago during World War II and the Korean War, and of raising Tom and Pat in Lake Forest. Charter member of the Rockford Chapter National Secretaries Association and worked as secretary to the director of development for the new Rockford College campus from 1957 to 1961, and at Ipsen Lab from 1962 to 1973. In her retirement, she worked as a secretary and interviewer at CareAVan. Survivors include son, Tom (Jane) Carrell; daughter, Patricia Carrell (Bud) Dodd; 24 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; cousin, Phyllis (Kenneth) Laurent, with whose family she shared many wonderful Christmases; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, here and in Sweden. Predeceased by ex-husband, T. Edward Carrell Sr.; sister and brother-in-law, Marge (Albert) Everitt; brother, Robert Dahlgren; son-in-law, Bud Dodd; and granddaughter, Jodi Dodd Ricilli. The family thanks Neighbors Rehabilitation Center in Byron for their care. Graveside service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Scandinavian Cemetery, Rockford. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or SwedishAmerican Hospital. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home Ltd., Loves Park.
