Yorktown Pays Tribute to A.M. Harper - May 7, 1928

Funeral services for A.M. Harper Sr., who died suddenly Sunday morning at 11 o’clock at his home in Yorktown, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Interment being at Westside cemetery.
Sunday morning he proceeded to the Presbyterian church to teach his Bible class. Shortly after he arrived he complained of feeling ill and went home, where a few moments later he suffered a severe attack of indigestion. At eleven o'clock, an hour later, with members of the family at his bedside, he suffered a second attack and passed away. Angina pectoris was given as the cause of his death.
Impressive services were conducted by Rev. C.H. Spence of Edna, assisted by Chaplain H.G. Markley of Del Rio, Rev. J.H. Freeland and Rev E.W. Dechert of Yorktown. A wealth of floral tributes gave testimony of the esteem in which he was held by friends and loved ones.
Yorktown business houses closed during the funeral hour as a tribute to the memory of a man who was at one time in business here and whose family was among the early settlers.
Active pall-bearers were M.G. Eckhardt, R.L. Wofford, G.D. Calhoun, G.W. Allen Jr., E.P. Zincke, and A.A. Strieber. The following were honorary pall-bearers: Dr. H.C. Eckhardt, Paul R. Menn, N.L. Ladner, O.W. Ehlers, John G. Kerlick, and Dr. G.H. Hudson.

After completing his school education here, he attended college at Corpus Christi and also a college at San Marcos. Later he took a course at Southwestern University, Georgetown.
On April 7, 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss Eda Gohmert, youngest daughter of Mrs. R.W. Gohmert, pioneer settler of this city.
He was senior member of the firm of Harper & McClanahan which operated a lumber business here from 1896 to 1898. The firm sold the business to W.L. Rudd, who was succeeded by the present owners, the Yorktown Lumber Co.
From 1900 to 1902, he was associated with his brother-in-law, J.W. Hoff, in the general mercantile business.
Following his business career Mr. Harper devoted his time to farming and stockraising. HE was an extensive landowner and the family maintained residences in this city and on the Harper ranch, twelve miles north of Yorktown.
