Longtime resident of Wilmington, active at Buzzell Senior Center, vet; 78
WILMINGTON -- Mr. David T. Landers, Sr., a longtime Wilmington resident, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the age of 78.
Dave was born on March 12, 1932, in Chelsea, MA, he was the son of the late James L. & Mary L. (Metcalf) Landers. Dave's family moved to Wilmington when he was three years old, he matriculated through the Wilmington School System, being the last class to graduate from Wilmington High School, what is now called the Swain School.
Dave held 3 jobs after graduation, the last one lasted for more than 48 years. Dave retired in 1995 from the Hastings-Tapley Insurance Agency in Cambridge, where he held the position of manager of the automation systems. His fascination with automation led him to become a self-taught computer nerd and he has set up computer classes for the Wilmington Seniors at the Buzzell Senior Center.
Dave met Nancy Devitt when they were just 14 years old. Nancy lived in Michigan, but spent summer vacations with her aunt in Wilmington. They married in 1951 at the age of 19, and about 13 months later became proud parents for the first time. Dave and Nancy went on to add 7 more children to the family. Dave often said, "There was always room for one more". Dave and Nancy lived in a couple of different locations in Wilmington, they finally bought the old family homestead from Dave's mother following the death of his father. It was like going home after 20 years. He lost his home in a tragic fire in 1969, but re-built on the same location where he was currently residing.
David was a member of the Commission of Elder Services, where he holds the position of Chair. He was very active at the Buzzell Senior Center in Wilmington, where he enjoys their many trips and activities. He could be found at the Senior Center just about every day and welcomed questions and comments of the Center as well as the computer. He also produced the Buzzell Buzz and was involved in their yearly Talent Shows.
Dave will be fondly remembered for being kind and compassionate, always helping others, for handling life's adversities with strength, courage, and grace, and for his devotion to his family, who meant everything to him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Dave was the beloved husband of the late Nancy (Devitt) Landers, devoted father of Harry J. Landers & his wife Janis Jacquith of Free Union, VA, Michael D. Landers & his wife Debbie of No. Chelmsford, Susan M. Landers-McNamara of Wilmington, and the late David T., Jr., William E., Kevin P., Lisa J., and Kathleen C. Landers, loving grandfather of David, Jackson, Jill, Tara, Kelly, Marci, Kaitlyn, Patrick, and great-grandchildren Ida, Harry, Madison, Ryan, and Michael, dear son of the late James L. & Mary L. (Metcalf) Landers, brother of the late James Landers, brother-in-law of Gloria Landers of Holbrook.
