World War I British Military Figure. Born in Church End, England, he served as a Private in the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, British Army. It is believed that Private Parr was the first British soldier to die in World War I. On the Western Front August 21, 1914, Private Parr with another cyclist were sent ahead of the battalion to patrol the village of Obourg, just north east of Mons and slightly over the border in Belgium, with a mission to locate the enemy. They encountered a cavalry patrol from the German 1st Army and suddenly came under heavy rifle fire. Private Parr remained to hold off the enemy while his companion returned to report and was killed in the ensuing rifle fire.
