East Haddam's Old Cove Burying Ground was a communal burying place. Interments were made without regard for reservation of specific placement of a person next to or perhaps even close to another family member. Until circa 1740 there was no skilled stone mason or gravestone carver available, resulting in only initialed field stones used as markers.
In a 1934 inventory of the burying ground that became part of the Hale Connecticut Cemetery Database, along with actual erect gravestones a considerable number of both distinguishable and nondistinguishable fieldstone markers were itemized, including the following in the order shown but not necessarily one after the other:
• T. F., field stone, date illegible.
• A. F., field stone, 1714 [prob. infant Abigail Fuller].
• F., field stone, date illegible.
• S. F., field stone, date illegible.
• Fuller, Mary, wife of Timothy, died Dec 12, 1770, age 73 [sic 78] yrs.
• M. F., field stone, date illegible.
• Fuller, Timothy, died Nov 30, 1748, age 78 yrs.
• M. F., field stone, 1726.
It is believed Mary Fuller, the infant dau. of Timothy Fuller by his 2nd wife Mary Champion bapt. in 1717, is one of the two fieldstones marked with the initials "M. F."
∼The fieldstone marked M F 1726 in plot #191 on the 1958 map of the Old Cove Burying Ground is most likely for Mary Fuller, daughter of Timothy Fuller and his 2nd wife Mary [Champion], baptized April 15, 1717, East Haddam 1st Congregational Church record. The grave is clearly that of a child as Mary was about nine years old when she died. Timothy and Mary Fuller had another Mary Fuller baptized May 2, 1731, East Haddam 1st Congregational Church record. This grave of Mary Fuller is two graves away from her father Timothy Fuller who died in 1748 [plot #188].
