He was a butcher and operated a meat market in the Washington Market (Front and Broad Street) in Trenton.
He married Elizabeth G. Schaff on 12 Mar 1863. Elizabeth's father operated a grocery store on the corner of Quarry and Calhoun streets in Trenton.
Fred and Elizabeth had three sons: John Jacob Miller, Frederick D. Miller and Harry H. Miller.
Fred and Elizabeth and Elizabeth apparently divorced about 1886. Fred married Catherine J. "Kate" Wert, daughter of Levi and Jane (Abbott) Wert on 22 May 1886. They soon left Trenton and headed West establishing a new home in Denver, Colorado. Fred operated a meat market on 18th Street in Denver.
It's likely that Fred's youngest son, Harry, made the trip to Denver. He appears in the 1900 Census living in Leadville, Lake, Colorado. Harry served in U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War.
Fred served a three month tour in Co. D, New Jersey 3rd Infantry Regiment. This unit formed at Camp Olden on 4 Jun 1861. He started receiving a pension 29 Jan 1892. His widow, Kate started receiving it on 26 Jan 1917.
Fred died at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia on 3 Nov 1916 and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia.
